Character of the Month of October: Shinichi Izumi

Hello world!  October is coming to an end, which not only means Halloween is just around the corner, but it’s also time to reveal this month’s Character of the Month.  I know October was a short month-by no fault of my own-, but I did get to review some fantastic horror-animes.  That much said, this month’s character was a shoe-in; after reviewing the shows for this month, I knew this character would take the spot.  Who can I possibly be talking about?  I’m talking about the leading character from my first review of the month, Parasyte: The Maxim, Shinichi Izumi!
Shinichi Izumi was an ordinary high school student until a strange man-eating creature called a parasite attacked him and devoured his right arm.  Trapped in a situation where he cannot tell anyone about the predicament he’s in, he and Migi-the parasite who attacked him-must learn to not only coexist with each other but also stay wary of other parasites who have taken up hosts in the humans they’ve eaten.  For Shinichi, that’s easier said than done.
One of the main reasons why I picked Shinichi for this month’s Character of the Month was because of the “evolution”-so to speak-that he goes through throughout the show’s duration.  In the beginning, Shinichi is this shy little nerd who’s terrified of bugs.  But not long after Migi attacks him and-spoiler alert-past the sixth episode, Shinichi takes on a drastic change not just physically, but also mentally.  In a way, he almost develops a demeanor like that of the parasites.  Character transformations like this aren’t new to anime; animes like Tokyo Ghoul and Akira have characters that go through similar changes.  But unlike the ones I’ve seen, Shinichi’s transformation is very gradual-personality wise anyways.  It also creates a lot of drama within the show as well, especially between him and Murano, the main love-interest in the show.  This change makes the show that much more entertaining and definitely won me over.  So don’t worry, Shinichi Izumi, your secret’s safe with me, but you’re Hanime on Anime’s Character of the Month of October!
That officially wraps up October’s horror-filled reviews.  Next week I’ll be hoping to kick off November with some reviews on some of the latest anime releases of this year!  Anyways, I’m off!  As always, stay tuned for more, and have a safe and happy Halloween!
