Bust Just Like Mob!: Mob Psycho 100
Hey there everybody! I’m (finally) back after a two week absence
with a new review! But before I get to
that, I do want to apologize for last week’s no show. However, it was a family-related incident and
had no control over it. Anyways, about
this week’s review…I was actually planning on doing this show next month, but I’ve
been following it pretty well for some time now…plus there’s ghosts in it. That’s horror related, right? And ghosts have been the thing since the Ghostbusters reboot, right? I mean the title for this week’s post is a
hats off to it! So enough of me going on
and let’s get on with this week’s review of Mob
Psycho 100!
This action-packed comedy follows
Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama, a dull and average looking middle school student. However, past his emotionless expression, Mob
is actually a powerful psychic who has
to keep his emotions and abilities in check, lest he loses control. These abilities land him a job working as an
assistant exorcist to Reigen. And while
Mob sees Reigen as a mentor for his psychic powers, Reigen is actually a con
man who has no psychic abilities whatsoever and often takes advantage of Mob’s
abilities when dealing with clients. And
if Mob’s abilities and job as an exorcist aren’t enough, he has to deal with
the challenges of becoming a teenager.
And that’s about all I’m going to say for the plot, because there’s a
lot more that you’d have to see to believe.
I heard some good things about this
show before even seeing it. And now
being close to finishing the first season, I have to say I have yet to be
disappointed. So I give Mob Psycho 100 an 8 out of 10. What probably drew me in the most was the
overall story. I could tell that some
thought went into it. It’s probably no
exaggeration when I say that One-the author of the manga- is a master
storyteller. It has the right amount of
drama-if not a smidge more- and the right amount of action. The animation was probably not the strongest
point for the series-hey, I said One was a master storyteller, not a master
drawer- but, the quirky and zany animation style made the series all the more
entertaining and fun to watch.
As far as downsides goes, there
really weren’t any that were glaring.
However, one review I watched on YouTube made a good point about the
series. In some respects to plot, Mob Psycho 100 is very similar to its “older
brother” One Punch Man-for those of
you who don’t know, both manga renditions of One Punch Man and Mob Psycho
100 were penned by One. Think about
it: an average looking person with the ability to defeat enemies with a single
move? Yeah, not much difference
there. However, Mob Psycho does have some big differences. While One
Punch Man uses conflict to move itself along, Mob Psychco uses other plot devices to keep things going. Mob’s life as a middle schooler alone makes
for some good drama. And while Reigen
takes advantage of Mob’s powers, he does genuinely care about him and even
gives some solid advice like not getting too cocky with his powers. So it may
be recycled material, but it’s good recycled material!
So if there’s something strange in
your neighborhood and you need a psychic to help, who you gonna call? (Last mentioning of Ghostbusters, I promise!) But
no seriously, Mob Psycho 100 has been
very promising and I can’t wait to see how it ends! Currently, Mob Psycho 100 is available to watch for free on Crunchyroll. And with the added collaboration with
Funiamtion, the show has also been put on Funimation’s fall “simuldub” line up. So expect a dub very soon! And that concludes this week’s post! Although October has been sparce in reviews,
Character of the Month will proceed as planned for next Sunday. Until then, stay tuned for more! And as always, if you have a request, let me
know!
