Character of the Month of October: Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama

Greetings, one and all!  Halloween comes tomorrow, which means the end of October and the unveiling of this month’s Character of the Month!  Now I know that this month has been a little sparse in reviews, to no fault of my own, but rest assured this month’s character was a good one.  Trust me!  So enough of me rambling and let’s talk about October’s Character of the Month, Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100.
So since I reviewed Mob Psycho 100 last week, I’ll be as brief as I can here.  Shigeo Kageyama, also known as Mob, appears to be like any other middle school student.  However, past his dull expression and ordinary appearance, Mob is actually a powerful psychic.  And when he’s not being a middle school student, he’s performing exorcisms with his mentor Reigen, a self-proclaimed psychic who is actually a con man with no powers whatsoever.
Thinking about Mob as a character, he comes off as not being all that special-minus the psychic powers.  But really, that normalcy in Mob is what makes him a great character.  Think about it: we not only get to see Mob as a psychic with unimaginable power, but we also get to see him as just an average kid trying to get by middle school.  If we look back on our own lives during this time in Mob’s life, we’d be focused on trying to fit in, keep up with homework, and maybe falling in love for the first time.  So when I look at it, I see Mob as just any other kid.  And really, that’s what’s unique about him.  How many other characters in anime with as much power as Mob possess are seen in this light?  And here’s something else to think about, compared to many of the other psychics that Mob encounters throughout the series, many of them rely on their powers to get by in life.  Mob shows these characters that having these powers doesn’t give them a free pass to do whatever they want.   That aside, you have to admit the psychic powers are pretty awesome.  So let’s face it, we all want to be just like Mob, though most of us have been there already.  And that’s why he’s Hanime on Anime’s Character of the Month of October!
That wraps up this week’s post!  Next month will bring some discussions, including one final update on the Pokémon Sun and Moon games before they come out-expect that post within the next two weeks or so.  But that doesn’t mean you won’t see any reviews.  Anyway, stay tuned for more, send in any requests if you have any, and have a safe and happy Halloween!
