Character of the Month for Flashback February: Tetsuo

Image
Well, ladies and gentlemen, Flashback February is coming to a close.  And what better way to end it with Character of the Month for the first Flashback February.  This will also be the first Character of the Month for this year-as many of you may remember, I didn’t do Character of the Month in January because most of my reviews for that month were re-reviews, and many of the characters have already been Characters of the Month before.  If you haven’t check the title already, or noticed the picture, you can tell I probably let my Akira obsession get the best of me.  Still, this character was definitely worthy of the title, obsession or not.  In any of it, I’ll get to the point and talk about Flashback February’s Character of the Month: Tetsuo from Akira. I know my synopsis on Akira was pretty long in my review of the film.  Keeping that in mind, I’ll try to be brief.  Though Tetsuo is primarily considered the antagonist for Akira , much of the plot f...

The Return of My Very First Anime: Ronin Warriors

Image
Greetings, ladies and gents!  Part three of Flashback February will cover another eighties anime, and a bit of a favorite of mine.  This show may not be very memorable, but those who grew up during the late nineties with the early days of Toonami may remember this show.  It also holds a very special place in my heart, but I’ll get to that later.  For now, let’s armor up for the action packed show, Ronin Warriors . Ronin Warriors , also known by its Japanese name Yoroiden Samurai Troopers , starts on an ordinary day.  Then, everything changes when the dark forces of the Netherworld quickly take over.  Led by the evil Talpa, he and his four Dark Lords plan to take over the world and also restore Talpa’s own body with the Nine Armors of Virtue.  However, standing in his way are five teenage boys- Ryo, Kento, Cye, Rowan, and Sage- with five of the Nine Armors of Virtue and powerful weapons.  They also gain help from a teacher named Mia Koji, a yo...

A Show to go Ape Over!: Dragon Ball Z

Image
Greetings, one and all!  Welcome to part two of Flashback February!  Last week, I reviewed one of the greatest anime films of all time, and now this week, I will be reviewing one of the greatest anime shows of all time.  It’s recognized all over the world.  Make any references to this show and anyone will get it in a heartbeat.  Well, okay, maybe not everyone.  But it’s certainly a show that is well known throughout the U.S., if not the world.  So let’s go Super Saiyan for my review on the anime classic, Dragon Ball Z . The series starts where the prequel series, Dragon Ball , left off.  The main protagonist Son Goku has grown up, gotten married, and started his own family.  However, Goku and his friends-Master Roshi, Krillin, Bulma, and others- have their world turned upside down when an alien known as a Saiyan attacks.  Goku is able to defeat this alien, but at the cost of his own life.  The gang then learns that two other S...

The Legend that Started it All: Akira

Image
Greetings, people of Earth!  Today begins Hanime on Anime’s first ever Flashback February!  And I’ll kick Flashback February with a review on one of the most legendary anime films of all time.  Released in 1988, this film has been recognized as a landmark in Japanese animation and a huge turning point in anime.  It can certainly be said that anime would not hold the subculture that it has today if it were not for this film.  So let’s cut to the chase here and get to reviewing the first anime on the Flashback February lineup, the great anime classic, Akira ! Based off of the manga of the same name by Katsuhiro Otomo-who also directed and co-wrote the film-,  Akira opens in a dystopian Neo-Tokyo.  In 1988, a huge explosion caused the destruction of Tokyo, and later caused the start of World War III.  Thirty-one years later- in 2019- Neo-Tokyo is now a cold, dark, and corrupt city.  One night, a biker gang led by the protagonist Kaneda, g...
