Character of the Month: Captain Harlock

Image
Greetings, fellow Earthlings!  This week, Flashback February will be coming to a close because Character of the Month has been chosen.  This year’s event brought some pretty great and some pretty weird classics, but only one character stood out the entire month.  Although, this was my first pick from the get-go.  So enough beating around the bush and let’s get on with Flashback February 2016’s Character of the Month, Captain Harlock! In a futuristic world where the Earth has become a world controlled by television and where everyone is just plain lazy, Captain Harlock leaves the planet to travel the galaxy as a pirate (though ironically, he still shows some devotion to the planet and a certain little girl named Mayu by protecting it).  However, Harlock soon gains a bad name and becomes the planet’s most wanted fugitive when he is blamed for a series of murders.  It is not long until Harlock realizes that the Earth is in serious danger when a mysterious race of aliens called the Maz

Sailor Moon (Versus): Old vs. Crystal

Watching anime by moonlight Writing reviews by daylight Not sure how to end this rhyme She is the one called Hanime on Anime! And this week, she’s back with the third installment of Flashback February!  This week, it’ll be old Sailor Moon versus new as I compare the original series with its reboot Sailor Moon Crystal to celebrate the series’ 20 th Anniversary-although I am a little late on the festivities.  And despite my beliefs that the release of Crystal was a great hats off to the franchise, it still doesn’t hurt to size it up.  So without any more delays, let’s get going with this Versus Post between the original Sailor Moon series and Sailor Moon Crystal .     Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal in a Nutshell So because both shows are pretty much the same, I decided it would be easier to give the plots of both shows at the same time.  Usagi Tsukino was what many people would consider to be your average schoolgirl-sort of.  Kind-hearted, clumsy, and maybe

It’s Surreal-ly Complicated: Angel’s Egg

Greetings, all!  Love may be in the air today-after all, it is Valentine’s Day-, but that doesn’t stop me from posting part two of Flashback February!  And truth be told, this week’s pick doesn’t really put you in a romantic mood.  This week’s pick is…odd.  Enough said.  I’ll go into the details later on, but for now let’s start with the basics on the second pick for Flashback February, Angel’s Egg . Angel’s Egg follows a mysterious little girl who carries a large egg with her wherever she goes.  She soon comes across a white-haired man carrying what looks like a cross.  In all honesty, that’s pretty much the plot in a nutshell-or in an eggshell in the case being.  Much of the film after their encounter is the two of them following each other around.  Towards the end of the film however, the man breaks the little girl’s egg while she’s asleep and leaves her behind.  She wakes up the next morning to find her egg in pieces and goes out to confront the man about it.  However, she f

See You, Space Pirate!: Captain Harlock: Space Pirate

Ahoy, mateys!  This be the first post of Flashback February, and for this week,  I’ll be tellin’ ye a tale of a swashbuckling pirate and his crew, an evil race of aliens out to take over the Earth, and…well, space.  But all pirate talk aside, this week’s review is on one heck of a show, and that’s not just because it’s the oldest show to be reviewed on Hanime on Anime.  So let’s cast off me hardies and get started on the first review for Flashback February 2016, Captain Harlock: Space Pirate. Set in 2977, Earth has become a dystopian paradise that pretty much echoes the setting of Fahrenheit 451 (the government controls everything and people are brainwashed with television).  Despising the new views of the human race, Captain Harlock leaves Earth and is later branded an outlaw after being accused of murdering several Earth politicians.  The military is constantly out to capture this “outlaw” and is even willing to use children to make that happen-in this case, I’m referring to the l
