Character of the Month: Light Yagami

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Welcome to my last post of 2018!   Obviously I’ve been scarce on reviews in that, well, I only did one this month.   Still, given that it was done on one of the most beloved anime series of all time, I think it was a more than satisfying final review.   That being said, this show did give us one of the most well know characters in anime, and he just so happened to be my pick for Character of the Month.   So, without further adieu, let’s talk about this month’s and 2018’s final Character of the Month, Light Yagami from Death Note ! Given that my review on Death Note is still a little fresh, I think I’ll save you all a synopsis on the series and on Light.   Then again, Death Note and Light are so well known anyway, you probably know who they are with out even watching the series. I’d be lying if I said I liked Light.   Granted, I didn’t hate him either, I just felt like he was a bit too overconfident for his own good.   I tend to not like charac

Ending the Year on a Good Note: Death Note

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it finally happened.   I’ve been made fun of by friends for not seeing it, and now years later I’m reviewing it.   That’s right, in my final review of 2018, I’ll be tackling one of the most renowned anime thrillers of all time…part of it anyway.   Admittedly, this was the last thing I wanted to review for the end of the year.   Unfortunately, though, the film I originally intended to review didn’t happen because I didn’t have enough time or money to find a copy.   Still, that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the show that I’ll be reviewing today or thought it was horrible. Far from it!   But what did I actually think about it?   Well, sit back, relax, and enjoy my final review of the year as I take a look at Death Note ! Light Yagami was an average high school student until he stumbled upon a mysterious book called the Death Note.   Light quickly learns that whoever’s name is written in the book dies shortly after.   This also summons the shinigami and origi

Character of the Month of November: Yumeko Jabami

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   I’m back from my Thanksgiving vacation with turkey and a cold, but am ready to wrap up Novembflix with Character of the Month.   This time around, my choice was unique in that the show she’s from was good, but not one that I gushed over.   It seemed foolish of me not to consider her though, especially given how much praise I gave her when I first reviewed the show she was in.   Well, enough beating around the bush and let’s talk about this month’s Character of the Month of November: Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui! At Hyakkaou Private Academy, gambling is the name of the game.   However, the students take things to a whole new level.   Thanks to the current student council, a hierarchy is set in place that can make, break, or even predict how your life will be if you don’t know how to play the game (or just be lucky).   In some cases, students are pretty much stripped of their basic human rights and treated as servants, or “house pets” as they’re re

B-yond Expectations: B the Beginning

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Sunday is here, and that means it’s time for part three of Novembflix!   In this final review of the month, I’ll be talking about a show that, in all honesty, was the best so far this month.   I kid you not, I really liked this show!   Granted, it wasn’t anything that spectacular, but it was a fun show.   Well, I can’t stand it any longer, so let’s get into this week’s review on B the Beginning ! Set in the fictional country of Cremona, a series of gruesome murders are being committed by a mysterious serial killer known only as Killer B.   Investigating these murders are the Royal Investigation Service and later legendary genius detective Keith Flick.   However, this case gets more complicated as more bizarre cases pop up that lead to a mysterious criminal organization.   What’s more, they have no idea that the murders are being perpetrated by a mysterious boy whose origins from the pilot episode are unknown.   It’s definitely a dark and danger

Luck Be One Crazy Lady: Kakegurui

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Welcome to Week 2 of Novembflix with a new review on a show that honestly, has been one of the most unsettling I’ve seen in a long time.   And it’s not even horror!   I kid you not, this show is bonkers. It goes to places you wouldn’t think a show like this would go to and makes you wonder, “what’s wrong with these people?”   That being said, let’s start this week’s review on Kakegurui ! Yumeko Jabami is a mysterious new transfer student to Hyakkaou Private Academy.   This at first doesn’t sound all that bad, but this school is far crueler than you could imagine; with the students coming mostly from wealthy families, the entire student body has set up its own gambling ring.   This was made even worse when the current student council president came in and set up a discriminatory system in which students who owe massive debts basically become servants – or “house pets”-to their debtors.   However, Yumeko isn’t fazed by this harsh environment, and i

Godzilla’ Anime Debut: Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   With the end of the Halloween festivities and November in full swing, we can kick off Hanime on Anime’s second annual Novembflix.   And starting off this week’s reviews on Netflix exclusive anime is a film that I’m honestly not sure what to think.   Though meant to be the first part of a film trilogy, after watching this, I’m not sure if I’d pick up the next two parts.   But I’ll get into that when I get to it.   For now, let’s talk about this week’s first Novembflix pick for reviewing, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. Set in a futuristic setting with the opening set on a spaceship, the film starts off with something a hostage situation in which the film’s main character, Captain Haruo Sasaki, attempts to hold the ship hostage just as it’s about to release a group of willing participants in a recolonization project.   As he’s arrested, the project fails miserably.   He then goes into more detail via narration about the film’s current setting and

Why Do I Like Dark Stuff in Anime?

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen of the Internet!   Welcome to this week’s Talkative Thursday after postponing it many, many, many times as I’ll be wrapping up October with something that may or may not be personal.   Well, if nothing else, you might get an understanding of my personal preferences when it comes to anime and what I tend to look for in what I do get around to watching.   Getting straight to the point here, why do I like dark stuff in anime? Given that Halloween was yesterday, it seems like an appropriate question to ask.   But looking back at not only the shows and movies that I’ve reviewed on Hanime on Anime, but also those that I’ve personally watched.   Looking back, there seems to be a pattern.   Most of what I watched in my anime repertoire and have thoroughly enjoyed have some sort of dark theme or element to them.   I did an entire month on Evangelion, a show known for exploring the troubled psyche of its main characters and not shying away from a bleak reali

Character of the Month: Rin Okumura

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen! Fall is finally in the air, Halloween is almost here, and it’s time once again to reveal this month’s Character of the Month of October!   This month I admittedly was not on top of things with this blog as I had been busy with work and some personal issues, so my choices for Character of the Month have been limited.   Still, this month’s pick was definitely a good pick.   I can’t wait to talk about this character so let’s get started and talk a little bit about this month’s Character of the Month of October, Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist . Because I just recently reviewed Blue Exorcist , I’ll spare you all a synopsis since I assume you guys read the review or already saw the show.   There really isn’t a whole lot to Rin as a character.   He’s about average and is about as stereotypical a protagonist you can get.   But unlike many stereotypical protagonists, he’s not as overwhelming stubborn or hotheaded.   It’s just right.   Granted, he is hot t

Have a Blue Halloween: Blue Exorcist

Greetings, ladies and gents!   Welcome to another review on another Sunday in October.   In continuing with my annual supernatural/horror theme of the month, I move on in my string of reviews with a well known series that’s barely ten years old but surprisingly good.   It’s actually been on my watchlist for some time and after giving it a shot, I now get to talk about it.   I can’t wait to get started so let’s hit the ground running with this week’s review on Blue Exorcist ! The overlying plot of the series revolves around fraternal twins Rin and Yukio Okumura who live seemingly normal lives with their father and priest (and later revealed to be an exorcist) Shiro Fujimoto.   However, things drastically changed when it is revealed that not only are he and Yukio are the sons of Satan, but that Rin has also inherited much of his father’s demonic powers.   These powers are further enhanced after he uses a sword called the Kurikara to fight off an attack by Satan himself. Following the

This Anime’s on a Boat…with Zombies!: Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Welcome to October and the first of some supernatural and horror-filled reviews.   I know I meant to start off the month right last week, but due to some certain circumstances, that obviously didn’t happen.   Still, I hope to get things going with a fresh new review on a pretty new anime film and more or less of a continuation on one of my favorite shows of all time.   I can’t wait to get into this review, so let’s get started on this week’s review on Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic ! Seemingly picking up where Book of Murder left off (yes, I’m well aware that I haven’t reviewed this yet), Ciel and Sebastian board on a cruise ship called the Campania, which is headed to New York City.   They’re also met by some of the other cannon characters like Elizabeth and her family, the Undertaker, as well as the grim reaper Ronald Knox.   However, this cruise is more than a vacation.   Ciel and Sebastian are on the liner investigating a lucrative group c

My Thoughts on High Guardian Spice and the Crunchyroll Controversy

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we’re going to talk about this today.   This was a bit of news that really had otakus and the anime community in an uproar for the past couple of weeks.   It’s caused such a stir that many people, including some of the most prominent and recognizable anime YouTubers, have voiced their own opinions on the issue.   In a nutshell, this took the anime community by storm.   It’s clear that it’s had a significant impact and will continue to have one in the near future.   Though I’m under the assumption that everyone has calmed down a bit from it, I thought I’d share my own thoughts on the matter while it’s still somewhat fresh in our minds.   And yes, I probably know better than to contribute to this kind of online cancer, but given that it’s gotten such massive attention- especially for all the wrong reasons-, I feel like it’s something almost unavoidable.   That being said, let’s talk about this. For those of you who don’t know the about this issue, allow m
