Character of the Month: Shinji Ikari

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Sunday is here and I know what you’re probably thinking, why am I doing Character of the Month a full week early?   Well, let’s just say I overlooked the fact that there’s more than four Sundays in the month of September.   Still, this seemed to work in my favor because that gives me a chance to talk about something that I probably know better than to talk about, but I’ll get to that next week.   For now, let’s talk about This is (Not) an Evangelion Event’s Character of the Month, Shinji Ikari! To give a backstory to Shinji is almost redundant.   We all know it.   This famous mentally scarred fifteen year old gets called in by his estranged father to find that he is being commissioned to pilot a giant robot called an Evangelion Unit in order to fight a series of giant extraterrestrial beings known as Angels.   In both the original series and the Rebuild films, we watch as this decision to take on such a he...

Evangelion the Series vs. Evangelion Rebuild: Which is Better?

Image
Greetings, ladies and gents!   Welcome to the last of the Talkative Thursdays for This is (Not) an Evangelion Event !   Throughout September, I’ve reviewed all the current films from Evangelion Rebuild and looked at all of the good and bad elements from them.   Finally, I get to end the discussion in a VS. post.   All of the posts from this month have all led up to this, and now it’s time to take a look at both the original series and Rebuild to see which one was the better Evangelion !   So sit back, relax, and let’s get this match started off with the original series! First Up: Neon Genesis Evangelion (the series) Starting in 1995 and with only one season under it’s belt, Neon Genesis Evangelion - or just Evangelion for short- was a series that followed the adventures of fifteen year-old Shinji Ikari as he pilots a giant mech known as an Evangelion (or “Eva”) Unit.   The series itself is notoriously known amongst otakus for its dark tone thro...

I Will (Not) Re-Use this Pun: Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Welcome back to part three of This is (Not) an Evangelion Event and my final review of the month!   So far I’ve talked about two of the currently three movies in the series and gave a couple of spoilers in between in examining the good and bad things from the films.   Now we get to press on and talk about the last current film in the series!   Let’s not wait any longer and get started talking about the third film in the Evangelion Rebuild series, Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo ! If you read my Talkative Thursday post earlier this week, you’ll know that I felt the first thirty minutes of this film was a wreck and hard to follow.   Well, despite that, I’ll do what I can to explain what happens.   Fourteen years after the Third Impact, a new organization called WILLE, lead by Misato, tries to save what’s left of humanity and destroy the Evas and Nerv.   Somehow, they’ve managed to recover Shinji   who’s b...

Top Ten Things Evangelion Rebuild Got Wrong

Image
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Welcome back to part two of This is (Not) and Evangelion Event ’s lineup of Talkative Thursdays!   If you remember last week, I covered some of the good things from the films.   You know, those moments of story-telling or added character development that could please any fan of the series and welcome newcomers to the franchise.   Well, as I always say with my reviews, for every upside to any show, film, or franchise, there’s always a downside.   And today, I’ll be covering some of the biggest downsides to Rebuild so far, ranging from the small to the big and with some things that I personally thought were way off sprinkled in between.   And yes, I am keeping in mind that the fourth and final installment to the films is currently in production and many of these problems will hopefully be resolved.   As it stands, though, these are problems that I’ve found with the films so far.   And with that, let’s talk about ...

Asuka is (Not) the Devil: Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!   Welcome back to part two of This is (Not) an Evangelion Event !   As many of you know, this week I’ll be taking a look at the second movie in the Evangelion Rebuild film series.   And while I gave a few spoilers to the plot already in my Talkative Thursday post earlier, hopefully it won’t deter you completely from this week’s review.   That being said, let’s talk about the second film in the Evangelion Rebuild saga, Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance ! Oddly enough, the film opens on a moment that was completely new to the franchise, complete with new characters.   In a test facility in China, tests are being run on Eva Unit 5 when the third Angel breaks loose.   The pilot of the Eva, later introduced as Mari Makinami, is able to destroy the Angel, but at the cost of destroying the Eva and the facility.   We then cut to a graveyard outside of Tokyo 3 where Shinji and Gendo try to have something of a bonding ...
