Character of the Month of May: Haku

Greetings, fabulous peoples!  I owe a huge apology for this late post.  I dropped the ball yesterday and completely forgot to post yesterday.  But all things considered, I have a fresh new post ready.  Speaking of, Miyazaki May 2017 has come to a close, and that means it’s time to unveil this month’s Character of the Month!  This month’s pick was hard to find, not necessarily because there were so many good characters.  To tell the truth, there really weren’t a whole lot of characters that really stood out (well, besides one).  Anywho, let’s get to this year’s Miyazaki May’s Character of the Month, Haku from Spirited Away!
In Spirited Away, Haku serves as the henchman for the sorceress Yabaaba.  Throughout most of the film though, Haku helps protagonist Chihiro navigate her way through the spirit world and Yabaaba’s bathhouse.  Chihiro later repays this kindness after Haku is attacked by Yabaaba’s twin sister Zeniba by returning a seal he had stolen.  This allows Haku to break free from Yabaaba’s control and find his true identity as the spirit of the Kohaku River.  And that pretty much sums up Haku.
Haku's dragon form
For the record, can I just say that this is the first time I’ve had a dragon take the title of Character of the Month?  Seriously, Haku is one of the most gorgeous dragons I have ever seen in anime, and it just so happens I’m a huge dragon fan.  While that’s one reason Haku stole my heart, there is more to this character than just his scaly looks.  Haku is the one compassionate character in Spirited Away who deeply cares for Chihiro’s safety.  Not to discredit any other characters who have shown Chihiro the same kindness, but Haku was one of the first characters the audience sees doing this.  Plus, Haku is one of the few characters that also has an understanding of the how the spirit world Chihiro and her parents have trapped themselves in works.  How many other characters in Spirited Away have that knowledge?  And finally, Haku plays a pivotal role in freeing Chihiro and her parents from Yabaaba’s spell at the end of the movie.  So yeah, Haku is probably one of the most important characters in Spirited Away, in spite of the fact he’s probably only remembered for being one of the coolest and prettiest dragons in anime (which in and of itself is a perk).  So spread the scaly love, Haku, cause you’re Hanime on Anime’s Character of Miyazaki May 2017!
Next week I will be resuming a normal schedule.  However, I do have a cool new segment of Hanime on Anime that I’m planning to try out.  So keep a close eye out for that and more from yours truly!
