Character of the Month: Haru

Greetings, fabulous people of the Internet!  July is coming to a close and that means it’s time once again for Character of the Month!  This month’s pick was certainly a no-brainer, but it was also one of the most unique character I’ve done on the blog (and FYI, it’s not the tree from Mirai). Well, with that being said, let’s talk about July’s Character of the Month: Haru from My Roommate is a Cat!

Shortly after the death of his parents, young introverted writer Subaru Mikazuki finds a cat he later names Haru believing her to be a sign from his parents and even a source of inspiration for his next novel.  At first, Haru acts like a typical cat (though she continues to act like one throughout the entire series), but she eventually opens up to Subaru a little more.  And little does she know, she’s also having a very positive impact on Subaru as she is unknowingly helping him become more open with others and himself.  Plus, KITTY!!!

So I know what you’re probably thinking right now; why Haru?  Why have a cat claim this month’s title?  Well, to quote my synopsis earlier, “she’s having a very positive impact on Subaru as she is unknowingly helping him become more open with others and himself.”  Haru is the catalyst for the entire the series and is the big catalyst for Subaru to change.  In fact, she almost reminds me of when I picked Viktor Nikiforov for my January 2017 Character of the Month, mostly in that Viktor was chosen for the exact same reason; he’s what starts Yuri!!! On Ice’s  events and is the source of motivation for Yuri.  The only difference here is that Haru, a good chunk of the show, is used as a comic relief.  But while she’s often treated as comic relief, she is a very important character.  Many of her actions and behaviors come off as funny-and annoying to Subaru- they all lead to moments of character building.  Remember the scene I mentioned in my video review when Haru knocks over the altar?  This scene is a perfect example of Haru how helps Subaru grow and change.  In particular, this moment allows Subaru to mourn and have an emotional moment, which you can tell he hasn’t allowed himself to do since the deaths of his parents.  Pplus it’s also kind of touching to see that even Subaru’s parents know that Haru is a pretty special cat in that she can help him change for the better.  So yeah, picking a cat for the title this month may seem strange, but based on what all this kitty does in the series, it’s certainly warranted.  So keep being a cute and fluffy source of inspiration and character motivation, Haru, cause you’re Hanime on Anime’s Character of the Month!

August will be another round reviews, but I’ll also have more information on my upcoming KyoAni event in September.  Speaking of, if you haven’t already, please donate and show some love to this wonderful studio!  And as always, stay tuned for more!
