Cooking Up Something Good!: Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma

Greetings all!  It’s time once again for another anime review from yours truly.  And this week will be bringing in something tasty because I’ll be reviewing one of the newest animes to hit Japan.  It was definitely a head-turner, so I think that it would be a good idea to give my first thoughts on it while it was still fresh.  Anyways, I’ll quit going on and get going with my review on Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma. (Warning: You will encounter food puns in this review)
Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma is about a young hopeful chef Soma Yukihira.  Working under his father, renowned chef Joichiro Yukihira, Soma hopes to one day run his father’s restaurant and surpass his father in skill.  Even in the first episode, it’s pretty clear that Soma has some talent.  Seriously, I want the recipe for that “Gotcha Pork Roast”-I know, spoiler!  Unfortunately, Joichiro decides to temporarily close his restaurant down, crushing Soma’s dream.  However, he does do Soma a favor- or maybe a disfavor-by signing him up for the most prestigious culinary school in Japan.  Getting Soma in to the top cooking school in Japan is definitely a favor, but there is a catch: it’s a difficult school to get into and only 10% of the students manage to graduate.  So as you can tell, the series tells Soma’s journey through the school to graduate and become a renowned chef.  So suspenseful you can taste it!
At first glance, I thought this show was pretty good.  So I’m giving it a good starting four star rating.  Granted, I only saw the first episode thus far and haven’t gone much further, but I’m definitely seeing some good things in the near future of this show.  Animation is definitely well done.  Aside from the characters, the food looks so good that you could eat it right off the screen!  I can’t say too much about the plot so far-again, I’m only one episode in.  But again, it’s looking pretty good so far.
On the other hand, there was one thing that bugged me a little bit.  One detail that goes on in this show is that people seem to have an orgasm and fantasize being naked while eating the food.  Call it humor or being just plain dirty, it definitely leaves a sour taste in the mouth.  I certainly appreciate the occasional sex joke, but seriously?  There’s a limit to what’s funny and what’s weird.  I’ve seen limits pushed further in anime, and this comes pretty close.  Still, take my words with a grain of salt.  I’m definitely going on with this show, and you should give it a try, too!
So of all the food puns-hey, you were warned-, delicious foods, and erotic eating scenes, I’m seeing, and tasting, some good stuff here in Food Wars!  Currently the show is still dubbed in Japanese and you can watch full episodes on Crunchyroll.com.  And so with that, that’s all that I have.  If you’re hungry for more-last one, I promise!-be sure to stay tuned for more.

P.S.: Next week I will not be doing a post.  I will be in New Orleans attending MechaCon.  I will be back the following week to reveal July’s Character of the Month.
