Character of the Year 2015 has been Chosen!!

Howdy howdy, folks!  This blogger has reached a verdict and Character of the Year has been chosen!  But before l get to that, I will admit, I may have lied when I said that there were no other changes made to the Character of the Year event.  Well, I did make a few changes as of late.  But for now, I’ll keep you all from waiting any longer.
Hanime on Anime’s Character of 2015 goes to…

Tetsuo Shima (Akira)

That’s right!  This year’s title goes to this eighties teen that took Character of the Month in Flashback February.  I will admit, I was a little obsessed with Akira last year.  But with good reason; it’s a fantastic film worthy of being a classic of not only anime films, but in animated films.  And Tetsuo is definitely no exception to this honor.  Although he’s considered the villain for the most part, he is more or less the major focal point of the film and a key player in the overall story of Akira.  Let it not be said that it’s Tetsuo who made psychic powers look cool-that is until he mutates into a giant deformed baby-and red capes the scariest things you see.  So congratulations, Tetsuo Shima, because you’re Hanime on Anime’s Character of the Year for 2015!

Now, one big change that I did for this event is that I decided to add an Honorable Mention.  As the title suggests, this was a character from last year who was just as awesome as Character of the Year, but didn’t get the title in the end.  And so, in starting a new tradition on Hanime on Anime, my Honorable Mention for Character of the Year goes to a very special anime character.  And that character is…

Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)

One of anime’s biggest icons and star of Miyazaki May came in at a close second.  The only reason that Totoro got passed up for the title was the movie he stared in.  My Neighbor Totoro didn’t really have a plot, so it almost seemed that Totoro had almost a wasted presence in the film.  Comparing that to Akira, well…you get the idea.  Still, that doesn’t mean I don’t love Hayao Miyazaki’s most recognized and greatest characters in the history of Studio Ghibli.  So with that said, congratulations, Totoro!  You may have not won Character of the Year, but you’re totally awesome!

But wait!  There’s more! (Last thing though, I promise).   This year, two months out of the year, I had two sets of characters share the title of Character of the Year.  So I decided to do a special award called Couple of the Year.  And no, this is not implying that the couple has to be romantically involved-although (hint, hint) this was the case with this couple.  This title also includes a dynamic duo in anime that just can’t do without the other.  And this year, the lovely pair that took the title is…

Kirito and Asuna (Sword Art Online)

I was certainly obsessed with Akira this year.  But I also fell in love with Sword Art Online, not to mention the show’s main character’s, Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigya and Asuna Yuki.  The relationship between Kirito and Asuna is something of a great find in anime.  The way the two fall in love so quickly in the series is so sweet and charming that you fall right in love with them.  Plus, this also gives them an edge in fighting that you just can’t beat because they are so in sync with each other.  So whether they’re fighting the floor boss or keeping cozy in their cabin in the woods, Kirito and Asuna are an anime couple you’d give the world to.  That said, congratulations, Kirito and Asuna, you’re Hanime on Anime’s first Anime Couple of the Year!

*Phew* Well, for the first post of 2016, that’s certainly a mouth full-or a page full in the case being.  Still, that wraps up Character of the Year!  Be sure to stay tuned for more because Sunday I’ll start off with a brand new review on a brand new show!
