Something Cute this Way Comes: Little Witch Academia

Greetings, fabulous peoples!   November is here and that means its time for the first review of Novembflix!  If you missed my post last week, Novembflix is a new event that I’m doing for the month of November where I review shows exclusively found on Netflix.  And this week’s show, I’ll admit, was one that I should have reviewed last month-even though it’s not a horror anime.  And if you picked up on the same title I used for my review on 18if, then you know this week’s review is on one witchy show in particular.  So, since I’ve given that much away, let’s jump right into this week’s review on Little Witch Academia.
Ever since she was a little girl, Atsuko Kagari, mostly known as Akko, has always wanted to become a witch like her idol Shiny Chariot.  She goes on to attend Luna Nova Academy, a school for witches, to learn all about magic so she can become just like Charitot.  However, she finds that learning magic is a lot more difficult than she bargained for.  But while learning the ropes, she gets into all sorts of adventures with her roommates Lotte and Sucy.  And that’s really the premise of the series; much of season one is episodic.
While I was only able to watch most of season one, I really enjoyed what I saw.  It was far from perfect, but I liked it nonetheless.  So I give Little Witch Academia a perfect eight out of ten score.  Given that Trigger Studios produced this work, the animation style is vivid, wacky, and colorful.  So, I honestly didn’t expect anything less from the studio that gave us shows like Kill la Kill and Kiznaiver.  Enough said there.  But overall, this show was jus so entertaining in so many ways.  Whether you’re invested in Akko’s struggles or the ensuing conflict of the episode, you just fall for each episode from beginning to end.  To me it does a great job of telling a story from a concept that’s been used over and over again.  In fact, anyone of any age could get into this, which was another great benefit; there’s no graphic blood or violence and no cussing at all-then again, it’s rated TV-Y7.  But like I said, that doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
While I’ll praise this show over and over again, I have to admit that Akko really was one big problem with the series.  It’s not that she’s an unsympathetic character (far from it), it’s just that she doesn’t seem to learn from her mistakes and constantly get’s put into predicaments in every episode.  It get’s annoying and frustrating pretty quick.  Speaking of, can we talk about Diana Cavendish?  Good Lord!  Rival characters tend to have massive egos and have no qualms in bragging about their superiority.  While I like her solely for the fact that she doesn’t brag about being OP (she leaves her lousy friends to do that), it’s insane how a lot of the conflict the show is resolved by her.  I don’t know what’s more annoying, Akko being an idiot or Diana being too perfect.  Still, despite what problems with the characters persist, this is one magical show you cannot miss!
So yeah, like I said, this would have been a much better show to review for October even though it’s not horror.  Still, if you’re tired vampires and werewolves, then give Ako and the other young witches at Luna Nova Academy a watch!  And with that, stay tuned next week when I take on part two of Novembflix with a review on the ever popular Seven Deadly Sins!
